Water Supply Pressure Adjusting Station

Water Supply Pressure Adjusting Station

BENSENVILLE, ILLINOIS
United States
Bensenville Pump Station

Greeley and Hansen, A TYLin Company, designed the replacement of the water supply pressure adjusting station and a community asset.

The Village of Bensenville (Village) is a small community of 19,000 people located on the west side of Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. Based on median household income, the Village is considered a disadvantaged community. Greeley and Hansen assisted the Village in attaining a $7.535M loan from the State Revolving Loan Fund (SRF) to design and construct the Water Supply Pressure Adjusting Station (PAS) Replacement.

A subgrade pressure adjusting station was constructed in 1989 on the Village’s primary water supply, storage, and distribution facility to control the flows and pressures received from the DWC transmission main prior to being redirected into the Village’s reservoir or distribution system. Since 1989, the subgrade PAS has fallen into a state of disrepair and is reaching the end of its useful life. Greeley and Hansen replaced the underground primary water supply PAS at the Village’s primary water distribution facility with a modern, above grade PAS with safe access to the pressure relief valving, isolation valving, sensors, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and metering. The new PAS was designed with “Prairie Style” elements to make the building architecturally significant and a community asset. These include wide roof overhangs, horizontal lines, and a color scheme that complements the building’s site adjacent to Veteran’s Memorial Park.

The new PAS construction includes other significant improvements to the site including the replacement and reconfiguration of the facility’s yard piping, the replacement of the Pump House 175 kW Standby Generator supplied by natural gas, integration of the Chemical Storage and Motorola Radio Buildings into the new PAS, and the replacement of the Pump House Roof. DWC and other stakeholders were engaged in the design process to evaluate cost sharing opportunities. To complete this design, Greeley and Hansen coordinated extensively with the Village’s System Integrator to evaluate the existing SCADA system and design SCADA improvements that are compatible with the Village’s existing system.

Project Highlights:

  • The team designed the replacement of pressure adjusting station.
  • Greeley and Hansen assisted in securing SRF funding.
  • The new PAS was architecturally designed to blend with the community.
  • SCADA improvements are compatible with the existing system.
